humanity. She takes five writers who are representative of different responses to this tension and explores the extent to which they offer the possibility of mediation and ultimate reconciliation. The argument begins with the two principal approaches to war in contemporary debate – realism and idealism – the just war of the sovereign state and the just war authorized by a supranational authority, such as international law. It concludes with a consideration of attempts to sustain a practical just war ethic through explicitly theological-ethical logics of mediation. This is not a book for the general reader, but it will be of interest to those who have an acquaintance with at least some of the recent debate about the ethics of war.
