I wish to congratulate the sponsors of this meeting for their courage in choosing this theme. It is a subject, like old age, that we really do not like to think about but it is one that we need to consider because eventually all of our oil producing areas will become mature provinces. There is, however, one factor in our favor when we prospect in the mature province. It was summed up years ago in a famous saying, “The best place to look for oil is where oil has already been found.” That makes sense! Mother Nature has blessed the world with certain geographical locations which have source rocks, reservoir rocks, the depositional history and the traps necessary for the formation of large oil fields, and it is ludicrous for us to assume that we have in fact found all of the economic hydrocarbon accumulations in a particular “mature” province. So, it is a good idea to bring all of our technological expertise to bear on areas where oil has already been found.
