The lead concentration in soils on both sides of the recently opened Mulgrave freeway, Victoria, was determined over the period from June 1975 to September 1980. A sharp increase in lead content was observed in soils immediately adjacent to the freeway, the lead being immobilised in the top few centimeters of the soil. Lead content of soils further removed from the freeway showed a significant increase above background levels. The distribution of lead was influenced by prevailing winds and the size of vegetation at sites (a).
